I am not a journal-er. I've always wanted to be because there is something romantic about it and my own sentimentality loves the idea of having a record of my life. I think ultimately the biggest hurdle for me is getting quiet enough to do it and the fear of someone else reading my inner most thoughts.

During this season marked by the repercussions of Covid-19, I've dabbled in some journaling. Really I'm just trying to offload the overwhelming emotions that begin to suffocate me if I don't and I do like the idea of making notes of the little everyday things that I know I will forget filled our days years from now.

So today was a day I sat down to process some things and flipped through what I've written over the last few months. January was a hard month. One of my best friends was diagnosed with breast cancer, LAS was really sick with the flu, Reese caught it, and I had cancel a trip and reschedule it. I wrote about how abnormal the month was and all of my feelings there in. And then I wrote something that is wild in light of the life we're all living today. A life I had no idea we would be experiencing. I've included it below:

Normal days are a gift. They don't feel like it. They feel rote, boring. But a taste of the bad kind of abnormal will send you longing for days when people are healthy and whole and unremarkable things abound.

Even the good kind of abnormal--vacations, opportunities, trips--aren't sustainable. Eventually we long for that which is normal. The funny thing is everyone's normal is different but it's comforting all the same. You know where you stand and what's next. But normalcy doesn't generally produce much trust in God or much perseverance. In fact, sometimes normal makes us think we've got it all together. Here's to appreciating the normal days and seeking God there and being thankful for the abnormal ones where we look to Him because He's really all we have.

--January 26

Okayyyyy January Betsy. My "journaling" is rarely eloquent and never neat. And the only explanation for this little glimpse of life then and life now is the prompting of the Holy Spirit. When I look back at our crappy January I know now God was just beginning the process of stripping away comforts and normalcy to prepare us for days ahead when the longing for the uneventful would be stronger than ever. And when I am overwhelmed by the trajectory of this year for myself and others and I'm overwhelmed with decisions about where to go and who to see and what's safe, I look to the One who is a safe harbor and who, in His kindness, has prepared my heart for a time such as this and isn't the least bit surprised by any of it.Betsy | Heavens to Betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02017188440211500870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6402489241925568654.post-36179638497356542862020-03-04T16:25:00.001-05:002020-03-05T18:37:55.286-05:00Lenten thoughts on striving.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you want your house to be bleach clean, I’m just not your girl. If you need your closet cleaned out, your pantry organized, or general home systems streamlined, I’ll be at your house faster than you can say "the container store." But cleaning baseboards, mopping, dusting just doesn’t appeal. If feels like so much work for about 30 minutes of cleanliness that is quickly destroyed by kids, dogs, and husbands everywhere. So at the end of 2019 when our budget allowed, my husband finally turned to me and said those magic words, “I think we can hire someone to clean the house.” I was so excited but also immediately ashamed. Like, maybe I should try harder or commit to a cleaning schedule. Should we really be spending money on this? The answer was and is yes. But there was and is a sense in which I didn’t want to let go of something that I didn’t even want to do because that also meant giving up control and admitting to my own shortcomings.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So after a bit of a search the day arrived and my new best friend Anita and her team of gals came to clean. She came well recommended but it still felt weird to leave four women at your house alone the first time you meet them. So I stayed. With my 3 year old. I realize this was dumb. But as I tried to keep me and my daughter out of their hair I realized there wasn’t much I could do. I had to sit there and let them clean. Reese and I went outside, we watched tv, and generally just moved form room to room to let them do what only they could do. When it was finished, my house was spotless. And I couldn’t take credit for it.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love a good "atta girl," especially when it’s for something I either didn’t want to do or something I know is important to other people I love. I was so excited for my husband to come home and see how clean the house was but was letdown by the fact it had nothing to do with me.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In that moment I was struck by how similar this is to my own striving in relation to Christ. He died on a cross, taking away my sin, making me spotless. And now, as I walk in that freedom, I can take no credit for it. There’s nothing I can do to add to or subtract from that, I just have to sit in it. And no matter how hard I work to prove my worth to the world, I can’t make myself better, or cleaner in the sight of God. That is a job only Jesus can do. I can’t help and I can’t take credit.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As I reflect on my own brokeness this Lenten season is it helpful to remember cleaning myself up and checking boxes on a spiritual t<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">o-do list will never bring me closer to Jesus. But giving Him credit for my righteousness and recognizing the work only He can do, absolutely will.

In 2019 I read 48 books. My goal for the year was 40 but at the start of 2019, I had no idea I would be co-editing an online book club for most of the year. This afforded me the opportunity to make reading more of a priority, necessitated learning to love audiobooks, and gave me the chance to get my hands on advanced reading copies of some of the year's best books. When reading becomes part of your job it does change your reading life. I find myself saving up "my books" for those times of the year when I'm not on deadline for a reading guide or monthly selection. While I love the books we read for book club (you'll see a few on my best of list) I also have tastes outside our typical genre and I find myself seeking those out for those in between times and considering them for our reading guides which typically have a wider reach of selections.

As I culled my list of 48 down to 12 (+ 2 honorable mentions) I thought about the books that stuck with me the longest--which ones was I still thinking about weeks or months later? I thought about the books I pressed into the hands of my friends and family--which ones have I recommended over and over again? And then I thought about my reading experience--which ones were enjoyable to read?

The answer to those questions are found in this list. I hope if you haven't read any of them or maybe if you've been meaning to this will give you a little push to check them out of your library or mosey into your local bookstore.

Happy New Year!

One of my favorite activities is always setting up a new calendar or planner at the start of a new year. For years I saved old planners and the like but my sentimental heart has moved on from this practice because who has the room? But I do like to take the time at the start of the year to flip through, remembering what the outgoing year brought with it.

This morning I sat on the floor of my office with last year's calendar, filled with birthdays and trips and appointments, and began transferring anniversaries and birthdays to a new calendar, empty, but full of fresh spaces waiting to be filled.

So much of our 2020 is mapped out already. We have some trips and events that we are already committed to. Visits with friends, weddings, big birthdays, a family reunion. There are only a handful of months whose squares aren't already filling up in some way or another. I'm really excited for these things already planned. They act like little anchors on a 12 month timeline. Things to look forward to when regular life drags on. I don't know that I've entered a year with so many things already on the table. If I'm excited by these pre-planned engagements, then I am bursting with curiosity at what will take place in the squares in between. What spontaneous fun, what heartbreak. What discoveries and decisions and growth. I'm sure there will be one where our kids do something adorable and one where I yell too much. One with unexpected news and one with predictable regularity. One where I crush the to-do list and one where I feel crushed. Because that's what the squares are there for. The good and the bad, the exciting and the mundane.

While I'm grateful for these big weekends to come I know that our life will be made in the squares in between. In the drives to dance class and walks to the bus stop. In the after-work debriefing and the brainstorming session. And just when I think I can't do one more load of laundry there will be a wedding to attend or a birthday to celebrate and with it a chance to reset my compass, live big for a minute, realizing that the small living squares are how we build a life.
Back at the beginning of summer I spent some time thinking about how to make some things simpler in this season. Specifically what kinds of dinners would be easy and delicious. Sometimes the summer feels like one long buffet table. With the kids home all day I feel like I'm constantly cooking and foraging for snacks so I wanted some go-to dinners that would be quick and not too heavy.

There have been 3 meals that I've had in heavy rotation and when I don't know what to make, I go with one of these and it helps fill in the gaps of my weekly meal plan.

1. Quiche! Now, if you live with a boy who may not be impressed by quiche for dinner, call it an egg casserole and thank me later. I use a pre-made pie crust or no crust at all if I want to trim some carbs. I whisk together 8 eggs, some veggies, sausage or bacon and bake at 350 for about an hour. Tips: I like to pre cook whatever goes in the quiche but make sure you let it cool off a little before adding it to your eggs. Sides: perfect with a salad or roasted potatoes.

2. Charcuterie board! This is SO easy and so good. Buy your favorite cheese, meats, nuts, and fruit and put it all on a cutting board. What could be easier? Also this is deceptively filling. Every time I'm worried it won't fill us up and we always end up leaving things on the board. Tips: Aldi is a great place to get affordable charcuterie components. You can make a kid friendly version of this by filling muffin tins with snacks your kids will enjoy Sides: Wine.

3. Salads! This is fun because there are endless possibilities here. Sometimes it's a cobb salad with bacon, hard boiled eggs, and veggies. Sometimes it's a taco salad with a base of chips, followed by lettuce, and then meat, peppers, and beans. It can even be a pre-made bagged salad with some rotisserie chicken from the grocery store. The salad is low effort and you feel great about yourself because you had a salad for dinner. Tips: This is my favorite salad kit. Literally love it so much.
Sides: Soup (if you live somewhere where the idea of soup in July doesn't seem wholly unreasonable)Betsy | Heavens to Betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02017188440211500870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6402489241925568654.post-19394356305257937852019-05-28T20:14:00.000-04:002019-05-29T17:54:29.025-04:00An Ode to Summer Reading
It was the summer of 1995. I was newly 8 and we had just moved from the panhandle of Florida to suburban Baltimore, MD. Ours was the second family to move into a new neighborhood and my sister and I were the only kids on our street. At some point after we got settled we did what would become my first priority every time my husband and I would move decades later--we got library cards.

Because it was summer, my sister and I signed up for the summer reading program at the local library which boasted activities designed to promote reading and prizes for reading certain numbers of books. Read 5 books, get a bookmark. Read 10 books and get a coupon for free ice cream. Years later I would wish one of those prizes had been fine forgiveness but alas that wasn't one of the offerings.

I was going in to 3rd grade and this was the first year I remember really having agency over my own reading life. I was at an age where my mom would turn me loose in the stacks and I could pick out whatever interested me and take it home to read. I didn't need help selecting titles and I wasn't counting on whatever books had been chosen for me.

I should mention we had no cable that summer. Our new neighborhood had yet to be outfitted with it and my mom called the cable company with weekly regularity, informing them they would not want to trifle with her if she had no cable come college football season. I believe they made an honest woman out of her by Labor Day but not a moment before. Thus the summer of 1995 was the summer of books and of The Orioles.

You know what you can watch with great regularity in the summer with no cable? Baseball. A lot of baseball. Being a sports family in the south means your only baseball team is the Braves and living far from Atlanta we were lukewarm on them at best. So the summer of '95 when Cal Ripken was chasing Lou Gerig's most consecutive games streak we became Orioles fans and despite having not lived in Maryland for 18 years, we still are.

When you move in the summer to a neighborhood with no kids, making friends takes time. We made friends with our newlywed neighbors who lucky for us loved baking and Disney movies but mostly, we lived in a sweet bubble just the four of us: mom, dad, my sister, and me. My mom stayed home with us so the summer was taken up with trips to the library, parks, running errands, and playing outside. We ended most nights at the local snowball stand or out back on the swing set all four of us built together at the start of that summer.

Our weekly (sometimes bi-weekly) library trips resulted in dozens of books read that summer. One after the other recorded on my summer reading log. I read about Felicity in the American Girl series. I read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Superfudge by Judy Blume. I read Nancy Drew (I've always loved Nancy) and the Cam Jansen series of mysteries. All total I read 54 books that Summer, from June - August. I still remember the disbelief on the librarian's face when I turned in my logs.

I can't remember the prize I got for reading well above any of the goals set by the program. But I do remember that magical summer. The one that made me fall in love with reading, the Orioles, and the wonders of the library.

Nearly 25 years later, I still make almost weekly trips to my own library. This time I'm the mom and while I can't turn my girls loose in the stacks just yet, you can bet we're all signed up for summer reading. Because one of these summers they'll have their own love affair with books and words, libraries and baseball teams, and I can't wait.Betsy | Heavens to Betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02017188440211500870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6402489241925568654.post-87769614476414095832019-05-16T18:57:00.000-04:002019-05-16T19:19:02.573-04:00Dear Preschool Teachers

Dear Preschool Teachers,

You've done it! You've made it to the end of the school year once again. Congratulations! I seriously don't know how you do it, as I specifically send my children to you to avoid being with them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (I kid, I kid...maybe.)

Next week my oldest daughter will leave your classroom for the last time. She's off to the great big world of public school Kindergarten and, God love her, she is excited. But like her momma she is tender and I'd be lying if I said we haven't each shed a few tears over this milestone.

When you send your first child to preschool you have no idea what to expect. You hope it will be fun for her and educational, provide you a with a little break, and maybe you'll each make some friends.
The reality of what happened over the last three years is so much more than I could have hoped for.

Oh if it hasn't been all kinds of fun! Class parties, water days, basket nights, mother's day teas, and so much more. And you know what the best part was? All the fun was simple. It was never over-produced or expensive or technological. It was imaginative, simple, good old days kind of fun. And in having all the fun she learned all the things. She learned letters and numbers and sounds but she also learned how to get along, how to share, how to be kind (side note, my youngest child has been completely potty-trained by her preschool teacher, bless her.).

One of the great underrated services preschool teachers provide is giving moms everywhere a break, be it for their sanity or their career. Thank for you the hours you provided so I could clean my house, nurse my newborn, and eventually think fully formed thoughts and find time for things that make me feel a little bit more like myself.

I'm a feeler of all the feelings so the social component of anything is, well, everything. I couldn't wait for my tiny girl to make her first friends and in turn befriend their mommas. I love the friends we've both made and realizing we are all headed different places next year has been hard to swallow. It's been precious to see my girl learn about what it looks like to be a friend and for the two of us to greet kids and parents alike every morning on our way in to school.

But nothing has meant more to me than the teachers and staff who created a safe place to leave my first baby every day of preschool. They have loved her like their own, they have discovered what makes her special and affirmed her in all the best ways. They let her be a kid and managed to instill lessons and values in her along the way. They were silly and flexible and showed us both boundless grace. In the end, they are who I will remember from this sweet, sweet season because they have made all the difference.

So thank you preschool teachers for the patience, the love, and all the handprint crafts I will never be able to throw away.

Love,
Betsy

Summer is for reading, am I right?! Here's what I've read in the last month or so and what is on my immediate TBR list.

Tangerine: A twisty, toxic relationship between two college friends unravels in mid-century Morocco. The setting here is the star. Morocco is a fully fleshed out character in the story and really enriches the plot. A good psychological thriller. If you need likable characters or hopeful endings, this may not be for you.

Crazy Rich Asians: SO. MUCH. FUN. A great book to pick up before seeing the move, out August 15. This book is told from several points of view of various wings of an indescribably wealthy family based in Singapore. This is the first of three books in a series and I definitely plan on picking up the next two.

The Last Time I Lied: Best thriller I've read in a long time! I love the mystery/thriller genre but I'm particular about the ones I read: they can't be too dark, I don't want to feel like it's something that could happen to me, no gross murder-y stuff with kids, etc. This was perfect summer mystery reading. Emma goes to camp at 13 and the 3 other girls in her cabin disappear one night and they have to shut down the camp. Now an accomplished artist, Emma is invited back to the re-opening of the camp to teach art to the campers. Shenanigans ensue.

If You Only Knew: I listened to this on audio and I loved that it was read by the author, Jamie Ivey, whose podcast, the Happy Hour is also a great listen. This is the story of Jamie's growing up years and the shame she carried from some of the decisions she made and how she came to find freedom in Christ. It was a great listen.

I'd Rather Be Reading: This may be the book I am most excited to read next! Anne Bogel is one of my favorite podcasters and bloggers and she has a new book coming out September 4 all about what it means to be a reader and love books. You can pre-order the book and no matter where you pre-order it, you can submit your order info and get some fabulous bonuses from Anne and her team. You can read all about them here.
I thought this would be a fun idea for a post on my best purchases this month. June was my birthday month so some of these items fall under the category of "things people bought me" but you get the idea. Here's what I would buy again in a heartbeat!

Lake Pajamas: One of the aforementioned gifts received and oh. my. stars. these are in fact the world's softest, most comfortable pajamas. Save your pennies and treat yourself to these!

Crazy Rich Asians: Reading this now and loving it so far. It's a little more intimidating than I thought it would be because its long and features a vast array of characters but I'm about a quarter of the way through and everyone who has read it, raves about it!

Packable Straw Hat: Honestly, I haven't worn this yet but owning it makes me feel more on trend, haha. I'm planning on taking this to Arizona next month and wearing it at the beach this coming week. I'll report back. (BONUS: The hat comes sized which is great if you have a large head like me, hello M/L option)

Target Bathing Suit: I can't get over the cost of this suit! It's 34.99 and fits soooo well. I had almost given up on finding a quality one piece at a reasonable price, but I decide to give this a try after seeing it on laurenebown's instagram. It's a dream, cuter in person than online, and I ordered a medium, FYI.

Y'all. Here's the thing: I have never loved summer. Even as a kid, I had a low level anxiety about how we would fill our time without the structure and boundaries that school created. And that still exists as an adult and even more so now that I am a parent. And I've decided this year as we close the books on another year of preschool that I'm going to try and implement a flexible summer schedule to lead us through our days. I have a lot of friends who have already clicked out of this piece because they love summer and throwing the schedule out the window and that is fine. I wish I were more like them but I am not, so I have to put things in place to keep me sane. Now of course there will be beach days and days this goes completely out the window but I am excited to fall back on it as much as I need to.

So here is how we are divvying up our days this summer:

Breakfast
Journaling/art time
Outside time or errands/activity ( This might include playing in the yard, going to library or science center or running necessary errands.)
Lunch
Rest time/ naptime
TV time (no shame in my TV game)
Outside
Dinner
Baths
Bed

This is obviously not rocket science. But there is power in having it written out and posted somewhere I can see. It shines light on how we will spend our day. I also have a running list of activities that my kids love so I can refer to those when I am stuck on how to fill that mid morning "activity" block. Come back next week to see what some of those are.

Do you love summer or loathe it? (Click here to listen to an episode of my podcast with my sister about our differing views about summer)

This past November LAS and I took a weekend trip to Asheville and I feel like we made the most of our 48 hours. When I have free time or vacation time, I often get anxious trying to make perfect use of the time and worry that I'm wasting an opportunity. So I am proud to report that our trip to Asheville, while obviously not comprehensive, was pretty perfect for us.

Friday

Flew in to Greenville and stopped along the way to visit our cousin who is school near Greenville.
We settled in to our Air BnB which was AWESOME! It was located in West Asheville and so close to all we wanted to do. It was a basement walkout with the owners living upstairs. The space was perfect for two--a small living room, bathroom, and bedroom. You can rent it here. I cannot recommend this rental enough--they even had robes and a white noise machine, which we are so used to hearing on the kids' monitor, it felt like home.

We went downtown and did a little shopping including the Battery Park Book Exchange (hello used books and champagne!), Asheville Bee Charmer, and Malaprops Book Store.

In trying to find a dinner spot we accidentally ended up at the New Belgium Brewery--it was a delight and there was a Taco truck called Belly Up that made for a great, quick dinner.

Saturday

Though the Biltmore on Sunday was wonderful, we both agreed that Saturday's activities were tops. We started the day at Biscuithead for breakfast which was without a doubt, the best meal we had in Asheville. We waited in the cold for probably an hour and it was worth every chilly minute. We enjoyed a gravy flight, a ham and egg biscuit with a fried green tomato and more gravy for LAS, and a fried chicken biscuit with egg, slaw, and sweet potato jam for me. HEAVEN.

We let it warm up a bit before heading to hike Catawba Falls--it was an easy hike with breathtaking scenery. Changing leaves and sweet creeks created the perfect Fall wonderland for these season-less Floridians. The Falls themselves were awesome and worth a look any time of year.

Saturday wrapped up with dinner at Tupelo Honey Cafe which was delicious. Grilled okra y'all. That's what you need to know.

Sunday

We started Sunday by checking out of our airBnB and high tailing it to Hole, a doughnut shop. The doughnuts were so good and different from your typical Dunkin, Krispy Kreme, local donut shop. They were so light and airy and they had a limited assortment of interesting flavors.

Then we went to the Biltmore and it was magnificent. I wanted to go to the Biltmore but LAS wasn't so sure until two sweet ladies in the line at Biscuithead convinced us that we had to go. We got the audio tour which really enhanced what we were seeing by providing some background information. The house and it's history reminded me of an American version of Downton Abbey. Decked out for Christmas, it was especially gorgeous. I would love to go back in the spring or summer because we loved the gardens and it would be fun to see those in full bloom. If you're in the Asheville area I highly recommend a day at the Biltmore. There was a ton to do and after 5 or so hours we had to go catch our flight but we could have stayed and seen more.

One of the things I love to do is read. I go through dry spells where I have nothing to read or don't have the time but when I get my hands on good books, I'm ravenous for them. My husband will routinely give me the side eye and be like "slow down, it's not going anywhere." He's the type of reader who remembers EVERYTHING he reads, which is great. I don't always, because I'm often catching a few minutes here and there and I'm a fast reader. But that's neither here nor there...

Now on to my recent reads.

Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld

This is by it's own subtitle, "a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice," which could really go any which way given how beloved Austen's original is. I loved this book--the retelling of P&P is modern but also very true to the original. You know who each character is (many of them share the same names) and I can visualize scenes from Pride and Prejudice as Sittenfeld retells them in modern day Cincinnati. I highly recommend it. Also, it's a quick read. I finished it within the week.

Ok, so I finally read this book after so. much. hype. I hate that, because I rarely feel like books live up to that hype and unfortunately I felt the same about this one. Don't get me wrong, I devoured it. Like read it in 3 days. The way it's written makes it quite the page turner and I genuinely cared about the fates of some of the characters but it was darker than I expected and when I was done I just wasn't as excited about it as everyone else seemed to be. I am wanting to read another of Moriarty's books to see how I feel about a different one. I know a lot of people have read all of her books--is there one you loved best?!

This is the first in a series of mystery/spy novels set during WWII. I loved this book. Totally in my wheelhouse--mystery & historical fiction, winning x2. Maggie Hope is the main character (who presumably continues her adventures in the subsequent series' titles.) and she is an American raised, English born woman in her twenties living in London during the start of WWII. She ends up with a job in the Prime Minister's office and gets embroiled in some espionage. As a result in this book she makes a career shift to spy work. It was a great read--fast paced, again, likable characters, and a couple of good twists. I've already reserved the sequel, Princess Elizabeth's Spy at the library and plan to dive in soon.

If you love podcasts, like me, I highly recommend "What Should I Read Next." It's a podcast by Anne Bogel, blogger at Modern Mrs. Darcy. She interviews people and asks for 3 books they love, 1 book they hate, and what they've been reading lately. And then based on their answers she provides them with 3 recommendations. It's delightful to hear people talk about books and why they love them and I always pick up on a couple of titles I would not otherwise have heard of. I also think about what my answers would be if I were on the show...

Next up on my "to read" list...

Mama Always Put Vodka in the Sangria! by Julia Reed.

I can't say enough about how much I love Julia Reed--she is one of my most favorite authors and she is funny and Southern and brilliant and I want to be her when I grow up. Her memoirs/essays are always entertaining and remind me of what's best about my own Southern heritage.

We are loving this sweet, new Easter tradition at our house! The Funny Bunny is a lot like your favorite Christmas elf who keeps an eye on behavior in preparation for the Easter Bunny's visit.

There's a great book that teaches the kiddos all about the Funny Bunny and his job and the bunny leaves little notes and surprises for your little ones. I love the idea of using the Funny Bunny to encourage good habits, gently remind them of things they should or shouldn't be doing, and incorporating scripture to keep the focus on the true meaning of Easter! So many great options for your family.

So we have dived into the world of pull-ups and m&ms over here...that's right, potty-training. #holdme

Also, do not be impressed by this. I don't want to do it. It's hard and it's sad and everything Sadie does these days makes me certain that training bras are around the corner. BUT, she is interested in the bathroom and likes telling us exactly when she goes and what she's done, so common sense would tell me this is our next right step. (Also can anyone chime in on whether or not to get the little kid potty vs using the adult version?)

So yesterday when I ventured to Target to buy said pull-ups and m&ms, I thought to myself, I will also buy a cute jar to put the m&ms in. Then as I tidied up the kitchen before heading out I realized we had an empty pickle jar and I thought, I can make a jar! And if you are (blessedly) not potty training, you can use this for candy, dog treats, etc. Happy DIY-ing.

So excited to share with you a custom project I did for Amy's Evolving Closet. Amy and I met at Lilly Pulitzer's birthday party several years ago and she reached out to me recently for a calligraphy inspired logo for her thrifting and consignment business. Amy sources high quality secondhand clothing that she sells to personal clients and puts on her instagram account for her evening flash sales. Amy is a doll and one of my favorite things about her business (I'm definitely a customer), is that 100% of her profits go toward funding her family's adoption of their son from Burundi. (This was the inspiration for the africa outline in her logo.) Amy used her logo on her social media sites and got a stamp to use for stationery and packaging.

Someway, somehow, I am now the mother of a 2 year-old. For the love. She is so fiery and fun I can barely stand it!

We threw the pinkest, most flamingle-y party we could this past weekend and had tons of fun with SO very many of our favorites tucked into our not very large house. It was a hoot!

There were a few details that you can recreate...
The idea that as much as I love Sadie, God loves me 1000x more is mind blowing to me.

As we approach 2, Sadie and I have approximately 37 standoffs each week. Always quickly followed by lots of kisses naturally, but we have this same, 'I love you, but please don't tell me what to do ' attitude towards life. (come to think of it, I should probably stop saying this to my husband when she's around). In a lot of these confrontations, I see how often we go toe to toe with God and backpedal when we realize we are in over our heads.

The first time I saw this was when Sadie was about a year old. She just started walking and always wanted to step off the sidewalk at our condo BY HERSELF. I always offered a hand to hold and she shooed it away every time. She would wiggle and stammer until she was juuuust about ready to step off, always lurching for my hand at the last minute. I do this with God all the time. When things are good and fine or when I'm determined to accomplish something, my attitude is 'I got it.' But then when I falter or become unsure, I'm grasping for His hand and His help.

I taught Sadie to say 'help!' when she starts getting frustrated trying to do something on her own. She says it more like 'hey-lp,' much to my southern delight. Lately she likes to test the boundaries of what is safe. Ahh the baby doll stroller....putting my feet on the top of wheels seems like a good idea. Mom and Dad's, big fluffy white bed, I will stand on it and jump around. I spend a lot of time saying things like 'that's not safe' or 'let's make a different choice'--often to no avail. The poor choice is made and the aftermath is a resounding 'hey-lp,' or sometimes tears. How true this is of me again. God is there in the midst of our decision making whether we invite Him or not. His voice may say, 'make another choice' or 'that's not safe' and in the end we are crying for help.

I'm so glad to serve a God who is there to lend a hand and doesn't hold it against me when I call for help after the fact. I want to do more things with Him from the start, I want to stop struggling to do it all myself. I want to be the person I'm training up my daughter to be. I think God knows that and I love that He is using her to train me up too.Betsy | Heavens to Betsyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02017188440211500870noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6402489241925568654.post-42985692655532296892015-07-08T06:00:00.000-04:002015-07-08T06:00:07.760-04:00In my travel bag...

The Mr. and I are jetting off this weekend to one of my favorite cities and I've begun contemplating what needs to be packed. Here are a few things I won't be leaving without!

1. Tassel necklace from my bestie...it screams summer don't you think?!
4. Black crepe dress from The Impeccable Pig...I wear this breezy dress so much, as my mother would say, it could stand on it's own.
5. Kendra Scott Elle earrings...Turquoise is the quintessential summer neutral, no?
So if asked coffee or tea, I am fervently a coffee girl. Have. To. Have. It. However, at night or when I'm sick I love hot tea and I've been trying to drink more of it as an alternative to the 2, 3, 4 cups of coffee I should not be having.

This mint tea from Tazo is SO yummy, it's refreshing with a touch of sweetness and I don't have to add anything to it to totally enjoy it. I think the biggest endorsement is the fact that my husband likes it. My husband, who has for 12 years, told me he doesn't like tea because it tastes like leaves. He loves this tea--he says it's like drinking icy hot because it kind of clears your nasal passages. I'm not sure "drinking icy hot" is a strong selling point but the man who hates tea, likes this one.

Go get some.

(Psst....also get this ABD travel mug that is making my life these days)

I think one of the harder things about staying at home vs being in a job outside the home is the lack of adult interaction and affirmation. At my old job, it was affirmation station, lots of "you're killing it!," "you are seriously so good at your job," "I appreciate you." And while my husband does his best to remind me that I am, in fact, a good mom and that I do a "good job" every day, do you ever wish your toddler could give you the same affirmation you got in your former life?

Like when you're at the grocery store and they see the Mickey balloon that is approximately $16, and as they begin to ask for it, you remind them this store has free cookies--"who wants a cookie?" Most days a maneuver like that is plenty satisfying on its own but just once I'd love my almost 2 year old to say "oh mommy, I see what you did there, you clever mom you."

Or when you are in minute 47 of waiting for your food to arrive at a restaurant and you've just made a hat out of a shoelace and paper napkin, just once I'd love to hear "mom, you're so creative, I can't believe you distracted me from my fervent desire to throw silverware across this establishment."

And then there is the middle east peace process style bedtime negotiations that end when you casually mention the rest of the books have gone to bed for the night and so must you love bug I'd love a wink and a "touche mommy."

Sometimes I think it would be nice to be acknowledged for the million tiny moments in a day when I single handedly avoid a nuclear meltdown but instead I will settle for big hugs and phrases like "one minute mommy" that show she truly is paying attention.

When the temps hit 90+ here in FL, I am all about the popsicle. It's like Summer's answer to cupcakes and macarons. So what could be better than a little cocktail and popsicle mash-up?!

I love this simple idea for a cocktail and dessert all in one. I whipped up some popsicles by pureeing mangos, a few strawberries, and a splash of lemonade. Poured the mixture into popsicle molds and put them in the freezer for several hours. Then I popped the prosecco and dunked my popscicle. Voila! The best of both worlds.
